This week’s guest is Dr. Jose Gonzalez, the Superintendent of the McAllen Independent School District and the 2020 Texas Superintendent of the Year. He is here today to talk about his philosophy as an educator and the work he is doing in his district. We get to hear about an exciting new project he is working on around positive psychology in schools and learn a bit about the power of his parent education program. As Superintendent for the last 6 years, Dr. Gonzalez has strived to create positive change and impact the lives of each student in a worthwhile way. The goal is to not only raise the IQ of the student body but raise the emotional quotient of the student body as well. With a big focus on the self, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills, Dr. Gonzalez is creating an educational environment built on positive psychology. Hear about how this is being achieved along with how this way of thinking and educating was inspired by Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar, a professor from Harvard University, teaching a popular Positive Psychology course.
